Black History Month is a valuable celebration every year. “This year’s theme for Black History Month is ‘Reclaiming Narratives,’ and marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.”
In Bromley, on 19th October, a highlight is a celebration:
“Events include the opportunity to support Black and Asian food stalls and traders and make a difference to small local businesses that will be trading on the High Street from 11am – 5pm. There is also a chance to learn about different traditions too, with African drumming and textiles workshops bringing something for all the family to the event.
“The event will bring music to Bromley too, with entertainment from Steel Pan in Motion providing the chance to discover the infectious rhythm of the Caribbean’s most iconic musical instrument.
“There will be plenty of opportunities to make a practical difference too. London Borough of Bromley’s Foster team will be at the event to promote opportunities to make a difference and foster children in the borough.
“Elsewhere in the town centre, The Glades Central Atrium will be hosting the Bromley Borough Rotary Club who will be exhibiting their work helping children in African communities. The exhibit will showcase the projects that have ‘made a difference’ to children’s lives by providing water, building schools, supplying books, classroom and playground equipment, and technical training support.
“From 2pm there will be Start Up Bromley sellers in Bromley Central Library too. This will be accompanied by a Start Up Bromley talk on Black Entrepreneurship Across Africa and the Diaspora from 3pm – 5pm in the Workshop Room (book your free place here). Then to finish the day off, the library will be hosting a Black Heroes Soul Food Café – An afternoon & evening of fun, music, dance, quiz , song and open-mic from 5pm – 8pm (book here). Celebrate Black History.”
On 25th October, there is a celebration outside Bromley, but with local involvement and inspiration, of the pioneering figure Flip Fraser. More here. We interviewed Joyce Fraser OBE, Founder of the Black Heroes Foundation, in episode 198 of the Bromley Buzz podcast, here.
